ABOUT JIANWEI MA
Jianwei Ma is a contemporary artist born in Hebei in 1980 and currently based in Shanghai. He graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2005 and has maintained an active artistic practice for more than two decades. Across different periods of his career, Ma has continually experimented with visual language, color, form, and approaches to contemporary painting, developing a body of work that moves between different artistic traditions and modes of expression.
His solo exhibitions include Walking Among Mountains at Awakening Gallery, Shenzhen (2025); A Simple Confession at Yier Art Space, Chengdu (2024); Constructing a Realm at Sanhe Art Museum, Chongqing (2023); Time at In Progress Space, Beijing (2016); and Realm · Scene at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute Gallery, Chongqing (2011).
Ma has also participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout China, including Why Landscape? at Rongbaozhai Guangzhou (2025), The Interactive Future — Season V at Luohu Art Museum, Shenzhen (2025), Reshaping the Landscape at Line Gallery, Shanghai (2024), the Splash Color Biennale at Liu Haisu Art Museum, Shanghai (2020), and the Shanghai Youth Art Exhibition at the China Art Museum, Shanghai (2013).
His work received the Best Creation Award at the Huangpiao Award Art Exhibition in 2022 and a Bronze Award at the Nanjing International Art Exhibition in 2014. His work My University is held in the collection of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, while other works have entered museum, corporate, and private collections.
Now based in Shanghai, Ma continues to develop his artistic practice through an ongoing exploration of painting, visual language, and the possibilities of contemporary expression.
